U of U students, faculty, and staff engage in Justice work and experiential learning over school breaks. Teams of students, along with staff/faculty partners, share work and stories with communities across the western United States to support non-profit organizations and community-identified projects.

Community Engaged Learning in Costa Rica & Cuba
Costa Rica: Discover practical solutions and alternatives to traditional development aid theories while spending spring break there.
Cuba: Explore the intersection of past and present in relation to current political, economic, social, and environmental changes there for a week during summer semester.

With over 45 community partners, you can choose an area of engagement that matters to you and become an advocate of justice as you work alongside them. You will gain an understanding about specific community issues, professional development experience, and connections to other volunteers with shared interests.

Apply your creative interests, develop new skills, and build your experience/portfolio across multiple marketing & communication functions in support of all Bennion Center programs. From creative services, to digital channels, to recruitment & outreach; let's have a conversation to see how we can work together.

Community Engaged Learning (CEL) Designated Courses - Open to all majors
CEL involves students, faculty and community partners working together to apply knowledge in authentic settings in order to address community needs while also meeting instructional objectives. CEL enhances and deepens students' understanding of an academic discipline by facilitating the integration of theory and practice.

Work-Study Reading Tutors at Elementary Schools & Site Partners
Federal work-study recipients work one-on-one with children at least twice a week to engage in enjoyable reading activities. Tutors help children feel successful by providing positive feedback and support. By joining this program, you will have a meaningful and fun experience as you gain skills and knowledge necessary for a future career.

Student Leader Positions
We offer around 150 student leader positions every academic-year, with applications opening in February for the 2022/2023 academic year. Based on your area of interest, all of these positions support our diverse community engagement programs. Terms are for the entire academic year. This is a great way to meet new people, spend your time for good, strengthen professional skills, and "feel" community.

On-Campus Living Residence - 614 Officers Circle
Bennion Service House residents work together to foster community and lifelong civic engagement among the 12 students living in this residence through action, dialogue, education, and outreach. The residents promote an environment of support, respect, friendship, diversity, and learning within the house and greater community.

Do you care about the world around you? Are you interested in making an impact in your community and learning with like-minded peers? Join around 300 residents to work in collaboration with the Bennion Center, fellow students, and local organizations to build connections that foster a sense of belonging in your first year at the U.

Capstone Project & Transcript Designation - Open to all majors
Apply your academic interests to meet a real social concern through a capstone project with a community partner and faculty mentor. Courage and optimism sustain Scholars’ endeavors to learn through inclusive collaboration on projects that support and develop innovative action within all communities. Stand out as a leader who strives to impact their communities for the better.

Academic Credential for Community Engagement - Open to all majors
The Community Engagement Certificate consists of 21 credit hours of course work with a minimum of 15 credits in designated community engaged learning (CEL) courses. A student must earn a “C” or better for all requirements.
