We have compiled a list of additional volunteer ideas that you can do on your own, either in-person or virtual/remote.  

All of the ideas below are organized into our

Community Engagement Pathways

In-Person

  • Do a community cleanup with your family or friends
  • Remove litter from the trail by bringing a trash bag with you on your next hike
  • Weed or pick up trash at a local non-profit, community park, place of worship, or other public spaces
  • Make/distribute food to people experiencing homelessness
  • With permission of course, mow a lawn or help with landscaping at a neighbor's home
  • Take good care of yourself to minimize your impact on the health care system
  • Wear a mask and be mindful of others by following COVID-19 guidelines
  • Give blood/plasma and encourage others to do the same
  • Walk dogs and care for pets of those who cannot leave the house
  • Shop and deliver for others in your neighborhood
  • Sew face masks for those in need
  • Ask your neighbors or local organizations how you can help
  • Donate, volunteer, or request local support with Covid Mutual Aid SLC
  • Donate food items to the Feed U Food Pantry

Virtual/Remote

  • Assist the blind through video calls by downloading the Be My Eyes app
  • Translate for refugees, asylees, or immigrants by downloading the Tarjimly app
  • Map areas that aid first responders when disasters affect vulnerable populations at Missing Maps
  • Assist in finding new discoveries by participating in a research project at Zooniverse
  • Train to become a crisis counselor with the Crisis Text Line
  • Contact local nursing homes to find out how you can provide social engagement to those in isolation
  • Record your voice to give a voice to those who have severe speech impediments at Vocal ID
  • Volunteer your skills to meet the wide-ranging needs of non-profits at Catchafire

In-Person

  • Support protests for organizations focused on ending police brutality and systemic racism
  • Attend your community or City Council meeting

Virtual/Remote

  • Connect with a local organization to see how to get involved in letter writing/calling campaigns
  • Educate yourself and spread the word about causes you care about
  • Start or join your local "Buy Nothing" group on Facebook to give freely of items you no longer need

Virtual/Remote

  • Donate $5 or more online to a local community cause or organization you believe in
  • Raise money for the Bennion Center or other worthy causes that are important to you

  • Register for a Community Engaged Learning (CEL) designated course this spring semester

In-Person

  • Buy online gift cards from local businesses you love

Virtual/Remote

  • Brainstorm, then email us at info@bennioncenter.org with your community-identifed need we should consider addressing
  • Order take-out/delivery from local restaurants once a week

 Virtual/Remote

  • Contact your local, state, or national representative about an issue that matters to you
