Engagement
The Bennion Center’s Residential engagement areas provide students the opportunity to live on campus while also exploring their community engagement interests and passions. You do not have to have prior experience to participate in these programs, but you do have to make a commitment to exploring community engagement.
Residential Engagement programs through the Bennion Center does require that you apply and are selected to live in these residential communities. Applications typically open late Fall or early spring prior to the Fall in which you are looking to live in these communities.

Bennion Service House (Officers Circle 614 & 615)
Located in historic Officers Circle, residents of the Bennion Service Houses engage students in opportunities to explore their civic leadership while living in the residence halls. No prior experience is required, but a desire to learn and engage in community engagement experience is.
The Bennion Service House is open to second-year students and above. Any major is welcome to apply.
To apply to live in the Service House, please fill out a housing application through Campus Information Systems (CIS). Indicate that you are interested in a living-learning community and select the Bennion Service House and answer the supplemental questions in the application.
Applications typically open in early November and close early January for the following Fall move in.
Bennion Service House Requirements
- Attend Monthly House Meetings
- Lead and attend World Café Community Dialogues (Internal to the Service House Residents)
- Residents of the Bennion Service House are expected to hold a campus leadership position connected to one of the pathways to community engagement. The Service House advisor can assist students with finding/selecting opportunities if the student is not affiliated at the time of application.
- Elected or appointed position within ASUU (student government)
- Bennion Center Student Leader
- Hinckley Intern
- Service House residents are expected to attend all of the Bennion Center Saturday Service Projects (September, October, November, January, February, and April).
- Serve as a peer leader in the implementation of Officers Hollow Halloween event.
- Residents of the Bennion Service House are expected to hold a weekly office hour at the Bennion Center
- Residents of the Bennion Service House will be expected to have a mid-year check in with the Service House Advisor (Sometime between November and mid-January).
- Participate in a regular Bennion Center program opportunity as discussed and determined in collaboration with the Service House advisor).
HIVE (High Impact Volunteer Engagement)- Community Engagement Tower, 4th Floor
Located in Kahlert Village, the HIVE allows first-year student in the residence halls opportunities to explore pathways to community engagement. No prior experience is required, but a desire to learn and engage in community engagement experience is.
The HIVE is only open to first-year students. Any major is welcome to apply.
To apply to live in the HIVE, please fill out a housing application through Campus Information Systems (CIS). Indicate that you are interested in a living-learning community and select the HIVE and answer the supplemental questions in the application.
Applications typically open mid-January and close early April for the following Fall move in.
HIVE Requirements
- HIVE Residents are expected to attend a weekly HIVE meeting.
- Meetings create opportunities gain a comprehensive understanding about the Bennion Center and explore community engagement opportunities as well as exploring the Pathways to Community Engagement.
- HIVE residents are expected to attend all of the Bennion Center Saturday Service Projects (September, October, November, January, February, and April).
- HIVE Residents are expected to attend 1 Bennion Center educational event each semester (Brave Conversations, Leadership Workshop, etc.).
- HIVE Residents are expected to attend 1 Service Corner Nite each semester.
- HIVE Residents are expected to commit to a regular community engagement opportunity in the Spring semester (this may be through Community Partner Programs, Alternative Breaks, Utah Reads or approved opportunities outside of the Bennion Center).
- HIVE Residents will be expected to come up with an engagement plan for their second year
(Optional): HIVE Residents will be given priority registration to enroll in the BENN 1020: Pathways to Community Engagement course.
