The Bennion Center

The Bennion Center is the University of Utah’s gateway to community engagement, advancing student wellbeing and success through transformative service, leadership development, and experiential learning. For more than 35 years, it has connected the university with Utah’s nonprofit community, mobilizing students, faculty, staff, and community partners in meaningful civic engagement.

The Bennion Center at the University of Utah was founded in 1987 to advance a vision rooted in the life and values of humanitarian Lowell L. Bennion. From the beginning, the center set out to connect university students with meaningful opportunities to serve their communities, blending academic learning with hands‑on civic engagement. Its early programs focused on volunteer service, community partnerships, and leadership development, quickly becoming a model for campus-based public service.

Over time, the Bennion Center expanded its mission to include community-engaged learning courses, Alternative Breaks, and other initiatives addressing social issues such as poverty, education, health, and environmental sustainability. It built strong relationships with local nonprofits, schools, and government agencies, helping students apply their skills to real community needs.

In recent years, the center has deepened its commitment to societal impact and community change and grounding its work in respect, collaboration, and ethical community service. It now supports a wide range of civic pathways with a core focus on direct service and advocacy—while emphasizing student learning and leadership.

Today, the Bennion Center remains a cornerstone of the University of Utah’s public mission, empowering students to discover their purpose through service and to become thoughtful, engaged contributors to their communities.
