Weekend Experiences

Alternative Weekend Breaks are short, immersive volunteer experiences for students who would like to join the AB movement but are unable to commit to a weeklong fall or spring break experience for whatever reason. Weekend breaks are a great way to get involved in a community local to Utah around important social and environmental issues. Breaks depart by 2:00pm on Friday and return to campus early Sunday evening.

Registration for the Fall 2020 weekend experience is open. To sign up, please complete the registration at our Alternative Breaks UMarket Store. Spots on this experience will fill on a first-come, first-served basis.

We recognize that the $100 down payment for the weekend experience can present a barrier to participating on this Alternative Break. If this is the case, please contact Grace Hymel, Alternative Breaks Program Coordinator, to make alternative arrangements.

This weekend break addresses the complex, intersecting,
and often unmet needs surrounding the broad topics of
refugee rights and resettlement. Working with organizations
such as the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Catholic
Community Services (CCS), the Hser Ner Moo Community
Center, and others, participants will support the basic
human rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced
persons in the Salt Lake Valley through direct volunteer work,
issue-specific education, and group dialogues and reflections.

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

Dates: October 16-18, 2020

Environmental Stewardship

conservation, human history, and the solitude and inspiration
within such a complex and fragile locale. Participants will
engage in dialogue and reflection about human-environment
interactions and learn the best practices of sustainable living.
