Well before the tires hit the road, our incredible team of student Site Leaders and Staff Partners are carefully crafting the transformative experiences that U of U students enjoy each year. These daring darlings of social change coordinate the community engagement, issue education, and reflection pieces on their Alternative Breaks experiences, and they'd love to share their enthusiasm for their work with you.
Knowledgeable, hard-working, and passionate about student engagement, these folx are great resources for Alt Breaks participants to connect with the campus community in different areas and ways. Kaylee Hymas
Hi! My name is Kaylee (She/Her/Hers) and I am a fifth year student majoring in Psychology.
I enjoy pottery, painting, and anything that has to do with being creative, as well
as watching sports (soccer, tennis, football, etc.). I also LOVE animals, especially
dogs! I am leading the Animal Advocacy and Rehabilitation Fall Break and I'm very
excited because it is a topic very close to my heart and am excited to help my participants
gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a animal advocate.
Andrea Baldwin

Andrea Baldwin
Andrea N. Baldwin is an Associate professor of Gender Studies and a 2023-2024 Presidential Fellow at the University of Utah. Dr. Baldwin who is an attorney-at-law holds a master’s degree in international trade policy and a Ph.D. in gender and development studies and is the founder of the Black Feminist Eco Lab at the University of Utah. She has several publications including her 2021 book monograph A Decolonial Black Feminist Theory of Reading and Shade: Feeling the University; 2019 and 2023 co-edited texts in the Standpoints Black feminisms book series; and a 2023 co-edited volume on Global Black feminisms. She is also the creator and co-host of Standpoints, a Black feminist podcast. Dr. Baldwin was born and raised on the small Caribbean island state of Barbados and considers herself an all-around Caribbean woman who loves everything coconut and soca.

Hi! My name is Yesica Medina. I am a 4th year student studying Health, Society, and Policy, Economics, and minoring in Spanish. I am a first-generation Mexican American. In my free time, I love to be outside, be active, and love to learn! I also music I am excited to be leading the Queer Advocacy break. There is so much to discuss and learn from the break I'm leading. From the history, to healthcare, societal, and systemic barriers that the LGBTQ+ community faces, and how we can advocate for them and ourselves. I can’t wait to create a community within the this break where we discuss and learn from each other and our experiences while engaging with community partners and their experiences.

Max Courval
Born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, Max Courval holds a Bachelor’s degree in geography from Arizona State University. At the University of Utah, Max works at Learning Abroad as a faculty-led program coordinator with faculty from across eight different colleges and schools. Before becoming a coordinator, Max worked with Learning Abroad as an Equity and Inclusion Peer Advisor. He has studied and worked abroad in Portugal and Brazil and is an alumnus of various national scholarships, including the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship and the Critical Language Scholarship. When he is not working, Max can be seen catching a movie, attending a local concert, or practicing capoeira.

Colton Stettler
Colton is a graduate student at the University of Utah pursuing his M.Ed. in Educational Leadership & Policy (Student Affairs). Over the past six years, Colton has created new traditions, promoted accessibility on-campus, and helped underprivileged students in the community get caught up in their academics at Utah Valley University. He is excited to start his new chapter at the University of Utah! In his free time, Colton can be found hiking, camping, playing pickleball, or watching the newest episode of Survivor.

Hi, I'm Emma! My pronouns are she/they/he. I'm in my second year of college and am from Logan, Utah. I'm studying political science and minoring in gender studies! I attended the Disability Advocacy last fall. After I get my bachelor's, I hope to go to law school and become a civil rights lawyer to improve laws and legislation for the queer community. I love thrifting, doing yoga, and I am trying to develop a green thumb!

Growing up in Denver in a single-parent household, I developed resilience and determination early on. After high school, I joined the US Marines, specializing in combat arms, which allowed me to travel the world and gain invaluable experiences. For the past 13 years, I have been dedicated to working within University Health, focusing on education and outreach providing invaluable experiences for both communities and medical students. My journey has led me to pursue a Ph.D. in Education Leadership and Organizational Management, driven by a passion for fostering an inclusive and academic environment. My diverse background and experiences fuel my commitment to making a positive impact in the field of education.

Hi everyone! My name is Jasmine, and I am the site leader for the First Generation Identity & Nature Break! I am a senior triple majoring in HSP, CommSHER, and Economics with minors in Psychology, Medical Humanities, and an Integrated Honors Health. I am super stoked to be a site leader, especially in regard being a first-generation of Mexican heritage student myself and a nature enthusiast! A huge proponent of this break is exploring nature through the lens of our common background, further delving into our perspectives as to what our bond is with nature and how to further grow with it. Other passion projects of mine, is understanding our indigeneity and our roles as environmental stewards of this earth! Through this break, I hope to be able to address and discuss the complex issues we are facing in relation to this break's theme!

Hello! I've recently transitioned into a new role here at the U, I am now the Program Manager for TRIO Upward Bound! I have worked with the U for a total 6 years now, previous roles include: College Access Advisor at Taylorsville High and the Program Coordinator for First Gen Scholars. All my work has been related and supporting Low-Income and First Generation students in a wide variety of backgrounds. I will also start working on my Masters degree this fall with the Educational, Leadership, & Policy Program here at the U and excited for it! One thing to note about me, you will always see me smiling and laughing nearly all the time!

Hey! My name is Amaya, I am a second year student majoring in Criminology and Sociology. I love hiking, running, and listening to music. I am ecstatic to be leading the Mass Incarceration break this year; this is something I am deeply passionate about. I look forward to meeting new people and creating a safe environment for people to learn and strengthen our understanding of mass incarceration.

I have been an Academic Advisor at the University of Utah for 10 years. I have worked with the College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing, and am currently working with the School of Biological Sciences. I enjoy helping students as they move through their educational experience and plan for the future! My educational background is in Family Consumer Science and Human Development as well as Educational Leadership and Policy. I feel that I am able to pull directly from my educational background in each advising appointment. I enjoy hiking, reading, skiing, watching TV, and eating fancy delicious food. I am looking forward to participating in an Alternative Break experience for the first time this year!

Hi all! My name is Alejandra and I’m a senior double-majoring in Sociology and Health, Society and Policy with a minor in health. I am so excited to be the site leader for the Immigration Break and can’t wait to get to know you! Through this break, I’m hoping to further develop my understanding of immigration while engaging in meaningful conversations and connecting with others. Outside of college, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends whether that be studying together, going to concerts, being outside, etc. I like trying new things and have been learning to play the guitar, although I’m not that good. I’m also a big fan of music and I’m always looking to expand my music taste so let me know if there’s any recommendations!
