What Does Eboard do?

The Eboard is comprised of 4 student leaders who work with the Program Manager and Graduate Assistant to shape the Alternative Breaks program through strategically planning, decision-making, and facilitation of program events.  

What we look for in our EBoard: 

  • Passion students who are willing to take initiative 
  • Desire to foster a power conscious community committed to learning and unlearning 
  • Able to connect program mission, vision, & values to daily tasks
  • Organized and proactive individuals with an orientation towards collaboration
  • Students whose commitments, class schedules, and work arrangements allow them to fully commit to the program and its requirement  
  • Interest and passion for community building through events, workshops, and socials

Expectations

  • Previous Site Leadership recommended, but not required 
  • Required previous engagement in Alternative Breaks program 
  • 4 hours a week during summer (can be completed remotely)
  • Estimate 8-10 hours per week during fall and spring semester (most hours completed in person and hours may flucuate during different times in the semester
  • Commitment to 2-day weekend (Friday night - midday Sunday) leadership retreat in August and November
  • EBoard members cannot serve as Site Leaders but can go on an Alternative Break
  • Must be able to drive a 6 passenger, university issued minivan
  • Attend the Bennion Center Student Leader Orientation, May 1st, 2025, at Gardner Commons

Commitment

  • April 1, 2025 - May 1, 2026

Financial Support

  • Eboard members are eligible to receive a $2,000 scholarship for the term of their Eboard position, Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 ($4,000 total)

Overview of Eboard Positions and Shared Responsibilities

  • EBoard works collaboratively to create meaningful and impactful Alternative Breaks that are exemplary of our core values: community, love, integrity, wellness, sustainability, experience as education, informed advocacy, reflection to action, accessibility, and hope. EBoard supports all aspects of Alternative Breaks, from outreach and recruitment, program development, site leader and staff partner preparation, to departure and beyond!

Shared Responsibilities 

  • Engage in weekly meetings with the AB Program Manager  and/or the Graduate Assistant; EBoard meetings; and meetings with co-leader (approx. 3 hours a week) 
  • Prepare and facilitate all components of Fall and Spring Site Leader retreat for Site Leaders and Staff Partners   
  • Support program-wide events such as Ethical Community Engagement Workshops, Reorientation, recruitment events, etc.  
  • Mentor Site Leaders in their role and provide appropriate support and feedback as they develop their Alternative Breaks 
  • Support a culture of power conscious community building

Education & Training Coordinators

(2 positions)

  • Serve as primary facilitators for weekly Site Leader/Staff Partner training course 
    • Developing/updating lesson plans and resources 
    • Providing feedback on content 
    • Assessing student learning 
  • Primary education facilitators of ReOrientation, held in fall and spring semester 
    • Update & create educational content that promotes lifelong community engagement for all Alt Break Participants 
    • Management of event schedule 
    • Assist in delegation of event tasks to Eboard team in partnership with the Program Manager 
  • Primary education facilitators of Alt Break Leadership Retreats 
    • Update & create educational content that prepares site leaders and staff partners to successfully plan their Alternative Breaks 
    • Assist in delegation of educational tasks to Eboard team in partnership with the Program Manager

Recruitment and Community Building Coordinators (2 positions)

Coordinator #1: Social + Print Media Lead

  • Manage Alternative Breaks’ Social Media. 
  • Creating recruitment materials, including social media posts, posters, and other print materials and coordination of placement across campus. 
  • Actively finding opportunities, and organizing/tracking Site Leader involvement in such efforts to spread knowledge of and participation in the program (tabling, class visits, club visits etc.) 
  • Coordinate the creation of Break Descriptions in partnership with Site Leaders 

Coordinator #2 Community Building Lead

  • Engage in storytelling and fundraising efforts to grow break discount funds and gather in-kind donations to support lower the cost of Alternative Breaks experiences in partnership with the Bennion Center’s Development Director.  
  • Coordinate community building activities for the leadership team, such as socials and support groups. 
  • Establish and maintain relationship between Alt Breaks and campus through ASUU and Campus Connect 
  • Coordinate spring T-shirt Contest by gathering submissions and promoting voting among the Alt Break community 

Both 

  • Organize the evaluation and selection of participants for Alternative Breaks 
  • Outreach to Professors, Students, Alumni, Clubs and other organizations on campus to get the word out and create partnerships 
  • Participate in tabling and classroom visits 
  • Attend weekly Site Leader/Staff Partner training course; lead sessions related to recruitment strategies, best practices, and community building
