Executive Board Overview

The Executive Board is designed as a collaborative leadership team comprised of four Stewards working in partnership with the Program Manager and Coordinator. Each Steward leads a specific dimension of the program, where and all roles overlap through shared communication, joint planning, and coordinated support for Site Leaders. The Executive Board meets regularly to align timelines, share updates, and integrate their work so that marketing, logistics, belonging, and partnerships reinforce one another. This structure ensures continuity, reduces gaps, and strengthens the overall participant experience. 

Qualities of Students on Executive Board:  

    • Students who take initiative and demonstrate genuine passion for Alternative Breaks and community engagement. 
    • A commitment to fostering a community grounded in respect, learning, and unlearning. 
    • Creativity and curiosity in approaching challenges, designing experiences, and supporting program growth. 
    • Ability to connect the Bennion Center’s mission, vision, and values to daily decisions and responsibilities. 
    • Organized, proactive leaders with a collaborative orientation and strong follow‑through. 
    • Capacity to fully engage with the program, including schedules and commitments that support consistent participation. 
    • Interest in community-centered impact through events, workshops, shared experiences, and social connection.

Expectations

Core Expectations

    • Commit 8-10 hours per week for the duration of student leadership term (with an average of 4 hours per week in the summer).  Committment is April 1, 2026- May 1, 2027.
    • Maintain active enrollment as a degree‑seeking University of Utah student (undergraduate or graduate). 
    • Demonstrate a working understanding of the Alternative Breaks program; prior experience as a Site Leader or participant strongly recommended. 
    • Attend Bennion Center Student Leader Orientation and participate in Legacy of Lowell (fall semester) and MLK Day of Service (spring semester). 
    • Serve as a Bennion Center Ambassador by developing a broad understanding of BC Programs 
    • 2-day weekend (Friday night - midday Sunday) leadership retreat in August and November (TBD) 
    • Summer Onboarding Trainings (TBD) 
    • Weekly Executive Board Meetings (TBD) 
    • Weekly Trainings (TBD) 
    • Ethical Community Engagement Workshops in September & February. 
    • ReOrientation in October & April  
    • Executive Board members cannot serve as Site Leaders but can go on an Alternative Break 
    • Must be able to drive a 6 passenger, university issued minivan

Financial Support

Eboard members are eligible to receive a $2,000 scholarship for the term of their Eboard position, Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 ($4,000 total)

 

All Executive Board Stewards contribute to the success of the Alternative Breaks Program by supporting program administration, student leadership development, and community‑engaged learning through passion, curiosity, and respect

Overview of Executive Board Positions and Shared Responsibilities

  • Executive Board works collaboratively to create meaningful and impactful Alternative Breaks that are exemplary of our core values: community, love, integrity, wellness, sustainability, experience as education, informed advocacy, reflection to action, accessibility, and hope. Executive Board supports all aspects of Alternative Breaks, from outreach and recruitment, program development, site leader and staff partner preparation, to departure and beyond!

Shared Responsibilities 

    •  
    • Engage in weekly meetings with the AB Program Manager and/or the Program Coordinator; Executive Board meetings; and meetings with co-leader. 
    • Maintain weekly office hours, weekly trainings and meetings, and provide ongoing support for Site Leaders. 
    • Facilitate and engage in trainings, retreats, check‑ins, pre‑departure meetings, and other meetings as assigned. 
    • Engage in mentorship meetings and contribute to Site Leader development. 
    • Assist with program logistics, including materials preparation, calendars, and tracking systems. 
    • Contribute to Canvas content updates, feedback, and grading. 
    • Support program evaluation, debriefs, and continuous improvement efforts. 
    • Foster a welcoming, accepting, and community‑centered environment consistent with Bennion Center values.

Development Steward

Position Overview:  
The Development Steward advances the educational mission of Alternative Breaks by designing, implementing, and maintaining high‑quality leadership development, training, and mentorship systems. This role ensures that all training aligns with Bennion Center frameworks and supports ethical, reflective, and experiential learning.  

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Lead implementation of development frameworks, including:  
  • Triangle of Quality Community Engagement  
  • Active Engagement Continuum (ACE)  
  • Ethical Community Engagement (ECE) Workshops  
  • Staircase of Accountability  
  • Civic Competencies  
  • Coordinate programming for ECE Workshops, ensuring reciprocal, ethical, and reflective learning experiences.  
  • Maintain and update training materials, including facilitation guides, retreat curricula, and mentorship tools.  
  • Update mentorship tools such as check-in guides and mentoring frameworks  
  • Oversee the implementation of Canvas training content for Site Leaders and Staff Partners.  
  • Ensure training practices align with Bennion Center values, university policies, and best practices in community engagement.  
  • Support ongoing evaluation and improvement of training systems through feedback and reflection.  

Qualifications:  

  • Strong experience in leadership development, facilitation, or training design.  
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail  
  • Ability to develop structured, clear training materials and systems.  
  • Commitment to reflective learning and ethical community engagement. 

 

 

Outreach Steward

Position Overview: 
The Outreach Steward builds and maintains relationships across the Bennion Center, campus, community partners, and within the Alternative Breaks program. This role supports recruitment, connection, and collaborative engagement that enhances the quality and visibility of Alternative Breaks. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as the primary liaison for campus and community partners. 
  • Lead outreach and relationship‑building efforts, including: 
  • Collaborations with Bennion Center programming 
  • Student organizations 
  • Campus offices 
  • Coordinate ReOrientation and other engagement events before and after break experiences. 
  • Support recruitment through intentional outreach and communication strategies. 
  • Represent Alternative Breaks as the Bennion Center Student Board and liaison to other BC Programs and opportunities. 
  • Manage outreach communications, including: 
  • Emails 
  • Community Partner research 
  • Event promotion 
  • Materials distribution.

Stories and Belonging Steward

Position Overview: 
The Stories & Belonging Steward fosters a respectful, compassionate, community-centered environment across the Alternative Breaks program. This role supports ethical storytelling, reflective learning, conflict navigation, and participant well‑being. This position strengthens the relational foundation of the program by shaping shared experiences, collaboration, and connection.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Guide community‑building practices, including community agreements, norm‑setting, and shared expectations. 
  • Support reflective learning through conversations about intent vs. impact, calling in/calling out, and ethical engagement. 
  • Promote mindfulness, self‑care, and emotional well‑being practices for Site Leaders and participants. 
  • Facilitate ethical storytelling and photography trainings and guidelines to ensure respectful representation of communities and experiences. 
  • Support program efforts to navigate conflict and resolution strategies with care, professionalism, and alignment with Bennion Center values. 
  • Support the navigation of Site Leader transition by ensuring continuity, shared knowledge, and experience that supports future student leaders and their success. 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to facilitate difficult conversations with care and professionalism. 
  • Commitment to ethical engagement, cultivating a sense of belonging, and student well-being.

Marketing Steward

Position Overview: 
The Marketing Steward strengthens the program’s visibility by designing cohesive visual materials, shaping communication strategy, and supporting consistent program identity. This position ensures consistent messaging and alignment with Bennion Center and University of Utah branding guidelines. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and maintain cohesive branding and visual identity for Alternative Breaks. 
  • Support with the creation of promotional materials, digital assets, and social media content. 
  • Coordinate marketing campaigns for student recruitment and program visibility. 
  • Manage social media strategy, posting schedules, and content calendars. 
  • Design program materials such as t‑shirts, stickers, and print collateral. 
  • Coordinate media projects such as ReOrientation videos and photo contests by managing timelines, guidelines, and content workflows. 
  • Primary liaison with Bennion Center marketing team, including for feedback, content approval, and posting timelines. 
  • Manage campus communication platforms such as Campus Connect. 

Qualifications: 

  • Strong graphic design and digital media skills (Adobe Express or Creative Cloud preferred). 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple marketing projects and deadlines. 
  • Creative, detail-oriented, and receptive to feedback.
